The boundary steles of Taiwan Customs, erected in 1869, were valuable historic relics of the time when Takow port was opened and the customs was established. Three steles have been discovered successively. One was found on the slope at the north side of the Former British Consulate at Takow by customs officers during a hiking trip. Presently it is stored at the Customs Museum in Taipei. The second one was discovered at one of Shaochuantou's alleys next to Fude Temple in 1998 during an excavation for the road widening project. It is being kept at Kaohsiung Museum of History. The third stele is still standing at the border of the Former British Consulate at Takow and in front of the customs dormitory. In 1876 the British Royal Engineers procured the permanent lease from Elles & Co. to construct the Consulate. The lot was next to the customs. To clearly define ownership of the land the stele was put up to indicate that the area within the range of the Consulate was the territory of the British Empire. The inscription V.R. on the stele was the abbreviation of Victoria Regina.
